Just yesterday, our next door neighbor called to ask us to keep an eye on their house, bring in mail etc as they were flying down to San Juan to go on a 7-day cruise…

Aside from my enormous envy – it brought back a flood of memories from my long ago (right after college) days as a travel agent. A lot of people when they think “the Caribbean” for some reason Puerto Rico doesn’t come immediately to mind. And THAT is a shame!

There are so many lovely areas and resort all over this beautiful, exotic island nation – far beyond the excitement and bustle of San Juan – and at very affordable prices. Aside from the many amenities of the beautiful long stretches of sandy beach – you’ll find a rich cultural history to explore and fabulous shopping too.

Another tip: if you are planning to go on a cruise – seriously consider choosing a cruiseline that sails out of San Juan rather than Florida. Because Puerto Rico is ALREADY IN THE CARIBBEAN – you itinerary will be infinitely more exciting and far reaching and you will visit more ports in more exotic places (not that I don’t also love the Bahamas!) But consider a 7-day cruise starting out in San Juan and visiting FIVE ports like Martinique, St. Marteen, Antigua, maybe even Caracas, Venezuela! Oh and of course a final stop in that shopping mecca of the Virgin Islands!

And if you do book a cruise out of San Juan – be sure to take a few extra days off to arrive early and enjoy a day or two enjoying their sunny beaches and exploring Old San Juan.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
