We have always been huge fans of Monopoly. It is our go-to game for family night. It’s not unusual to start a game and have it continue through the weekend as one of us tries to stake claim as the champion!
Monopoly has come out with various themed versions over the years and we recently had the opportunity to try a new Monopoly Empire, featuring the world’s top brands!
MONOPOLY EMPIRE Game
Age: 8+; Players 2-4; Available: Summer 2013; Approximate Retail Price: $19.99
Experience everyone’s favorite property trading game in a whole new way! With the MONOPOLY EMPIRE game, kids can now buy and sell some of the world’s favorite brands. Twenty-two top brands such as Coca-Cola, Xbox, Samsung, EA and McDonald’s line the tricked out game board, letting players live out the fantasy of owning it all! Make your way around the board buying up your favorite mega brands and adding them to your billboard tower. Collect rent from your opponents based on your billboard and be the first to complete your town to win the game!
The new Monopoly Empire is much like the old game but with a few new twists! For one, the properties are brands that are more familiar to our generation of game players. Instead of collecting property cards, you collect billboards to add to your tower. The tokens are gold and represent brands like McDonald’s and Xbox. It has a more modern feel to it than the original Monopoly game.
Isn’t it funny how we all three set up our money differently?
The goal is to collect enough billboards to build your empire and fill your tower. Game play is much the same but there are a few minor differences. Players roll and circle the board and buy properties they land on or the property is immediately auctioned off to the highest bidder. Passing Go or Collecting Rent amounts are dependent on your tower worth (50k-800k).
The railroads are no longer on the game but Chance survived the cut. Community Chest has been replaced with Empire Cards, a card that gives you special privileges like swamping tiles and reversing rent. The cool thing about the Empire Cards is that you don’t share what they say to the other players until you are ready to play it.
What is nice about this new Monopoly game is the elimination of days-long game play (at least to a mom of six kids!). Since the player who fills their tower with billboards first is the winner, each game lasts less than a half hour.
So far, we are really enjoying Monopoly Empire. Although it is a shorter game play and the title of Monopoly Master isn’t quite as fulfilling as conquering a day long game, it is nice because every one gets a chance to gain winner’s status during a night of play. Kinsley isn’t too happy about not being old enough to play by herself (it’s 8 and up) but even at four years old, she is able to help mommy play with ease. Of course, she only wanted to land on McDonald’s!
Monopoly Empire is a great family game night choice and one we love having in our collection!
One lucky reader is going to win a Monopoly Empire Game!
